Magnificat

What we’re sharing with your kiddos this week!….This Sunday, during the Responsorial Psalm, we read the prayer of Mary, the mother of God, called the “Magnificat” from the Gospel of Luke.

When Mary was a young girl, she knew the story of Israel. It was her family history—the epic of Moses, the prophecies of Isaiah, the psalms of David. Mary was a prayerful Jewish woman who loved God and had faith that He would fulfill His promise of sending a King who would restore her people!

When the Angel Gabriel came to Mary and asked her to be the mother of Jesus, she immediately said “Yes!” When we read Mary’s Magnificat, a prayer she spoke to Elizabeth, we get an idea of what she was thinking and feeling about being the mother of God. Mary felt humbled to participate in God’s plan to save His people. She wanted only what God wanted. Her heart was full of thanksgiving and praise as she remembered God had taken such good care of the Israelites over the centuries (even when they weren’t doing a good job loving Him), and she remembered God’s covenant with Abraham and believed.

This prayer is very special because Mary uses beautiful images and words of the psalm writers and prophets who foretold her people that a “Savior” was coming to remember with great joy that God is faithful to His promises! For example, Psalm 126 sings, “the Lord has done great things;” and Psalm 107:9 sings, For he satisfied the thirsty, filled the hungry with good things;” and Psalm 98:3 sings, “He has remembered His mercy.”
