Day 23

She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21

Joseph was Mary’s husband and the foster father of Jesus. He is a descendant of the line of David and the Tribe of Judah. Just like Mary, Joseph was visited by an angel who told him about baby Jesus. The angel told him to not be afraid and to take Mary into his home and await the birth of Jesus. Joseph was a faithful man and did as the angel said.

God chose Joseph to be Mary’s husband and Jesus’s foster father because He knew how well Joseph would love and protect them both. There is no recorded word spoken by Joseph in the Bible, yet we seem to know so much about his character by the sacrificial love he showed toward his family. He was a great husband and a great dad. Because of his role as a loving protector of the Holy Family, Joseph was made the patron saint of the Holy Catholic Church!

Joseph’s role as a foster father reminds us of the importance of fatherhood. Joseph stepped into Jesus’s life as his father not because he had to but because he wanted to do what God was asking. He knew the importance of family and the gift of new life. Fatherhood is a share in the Divine Fatherhood of God!

I pledge to joyfully reawaken a culture of life in my domestic church!
