the little way

Why care about respect life month?

Good question! I will answer with a little story…

Last year I taught the Confirmation class at my parish. During our second class, I asked the students (ages 12-14) to write anonymous questions they had about our Catholic faith. Out of 10 students, I had the following questions:

What is the Church’s stance on abortion in the case of rape?

What does the Church think about tattoos?

Does marriage have to be between only a man and a woman?

If someone commits suicide, do they go straight to hell?

Is it okay to be gay in the Church?

Friends, our kids have questions—big, important, spiritual questions—and they deserve answers rooted in Truth. We should care about Respect Life Month because it is the kick in the pants we need to start the conversation with our children about God’s design for life and love. The answer to every one of my student’s questions—and the questions your children have—must be rooted in reverence for the dignity of the human person.

Praise God that these kids are asking these questions in church—how awesome is that! It is a reminder that our children are listening, they are asking, they are seeking… Give them Christ. It’s Him they are searching for!

As parents, we answer big questions best by planting seeds early, but it is never too late to begin. St. Therese’s “little way” encourages us as parents to embrace every opportunity in our day-to-day to pour Christ’s love and truth into the heart of our home.

Today is the Feast Day of St. Therese of Lisieux. Take a “little” time today to read our Pray, Grow & Serve Devotional about her with your child. Want to learn more? Consider reading St. Therese’s autobiography, “Story of a Soul.”

See you tomorrow as we continue October’s Little Way!
